M. Keefe Gorman Discusses St. Lawrence University and the Vilas Scholarship

Based out of Canton, New York, St. Lawrence University offers students a notable academic experience. Founded in 1856, St. Lawrence University functions as a liberal arts institution that adopted its name from its proximity to the St. Lawrence River. Along with its more than 100 student groups, the college features several merit-based scholarships, including the Vilas Scholarship.

The Vilas Scholarship honors exceptional St. Lawrence University students interested in pursuing a career in business by offering a full academic scholarship. Created in 1976 and named after Homer A. Vilas, a graduate of the school who became a Wall Street financier, this award requires applicants to answer an essay question such as “Imagine you are granted $100,000 to invest in an existing business or create your own. How would you utilize the funds?” The selection committee chooses six students as finalists and flies them to New York to interview for the prize. Two or three pupils receive the scholarship every year, while finalists who do not win the top award are named Presidential scholars.
