A top-ranked financial advisor, Keefe Gorman is the managing director of investments for Merrill Lynch. Keefe Gorman is heavily involved in efforts to serve his community and has served on the boards of several charitable organizations. As an eight-year member of the board of directors for Foodnet Meals on Wheels, he dedicated his time and expertise to helping the elderly in Tompkins County, New York.

Foodnet Meals on Wheels has worked to promote the dignity and well-being of the elderly in Tompkins County since 1987. According to Foodnet, about 40% of older adults do not receive adequate nutrition, thereby increasing their risk for serious chronic health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. The organization’s efforts to provide nutritious meals help people to avoid these conditions and continue to live independently.

Foodnet employs a full-time dietician who oversees all the nutritional aspects of the Meals on Wheels program. In addition to providing an initial home visitation to determine eligibility, the dietician also provides individual nutrition counseling and provides referrals to other programs to help clients stay independent. In 2014, nearly 175,000 healthy, balanced meals were provided to area residents.

The Ithaca Sunrise Rotary Club, a charter of Rotary International, is committed to peace through service – the 2012-13 Rotary International theme. To this end, Ithaca Sunrise Rotary has partnered with the Ovalle, Chile Rotary club to build a facility for teaching English. Through district matching with International Rotary foundation grants, the funds to equip an English teaching lab will be raised. Keefe Gorman is currently on the Board of Directors of the Ithaca Sunrise Rotary Club and recently traveled to Chile to check up on the project.

The need for English teaching facilities in Ovalle is great because residents of this small city north of Santiago do not have access to English language classes beyond high school. English speaking and writing skills are important for Chileans wishing to do business with English speaking countries.

Rotary International’s strength lies in the ability to connect people who otherwise may not be aware of another’s need, and in the connections already in place through Rotary clubs. This partnership between Ithaca and Ovalle is an example of that strength.

M. Keefe Gorman Discusses St. Lawrence University and the Vilas Scholarship

Based out of Canton, New York, St. Lawrence University offers students a notable academic experience. Founded in 1856, St. Lawrence University functions as a liberal arts institution that adopted its name from its proximity to the St. Lawrence River. Along with its more than 100 student groups, the college features several merit-based scholarships, including the Vilas Scholarship.

The Vilas Scholarship honors exceptional St. Lawrence University students interested in pursuing a career in business by offering a full academic scholarship. Created in 1976 and named after Homer A. Vilas, a graduate of the school who became a Wall Street financier, this award requires applicants to answer an essay question such as “Imagine you are granted $100,000 to invest in an existing business or create your own. How would you utilize the funds?” The selection committee chooses six students as finalists and flies them to New York to interview for the prize. Two or three pupils receive the scholarship every year, while finalists who do not win the top award are named Presidential scholars.
