Michael Keefe Gorman: Foodnet Meals on Wheels Provides Locally Grown Produce
A top-ranked financial adviser by financial industry publications, Michael Keefe Gorman served for eight years on the Board of Directors of Foodnet Meals on Wheels of Tompkins County. A longtime New York resident, he participates in many community organizations.
Volunteers with Foodnet Meals on Wheels of Tompkins County prepare and deliver hundreds of meals on a daily basis. Through Menu Improvement Grants and donations from local vegetable gardeners, the nonprofit is able to include nutrient-rich menu items such as fresh fruit, long-grain rice, winter squash, potatoes, tomatoes, and greens in the meals it prepares for homebound seniors and others who need meal delivery. The organization also provides such services as nutrition counseling and outside service referrals. Much of the group’s local produce comes from its own kitchen garden project and from client-tended gardens at a local rehabilitation center. Foodnet Meals on Wheels of Tompkins County celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2012.
