Nursing Home Residents Regain Independence through Restorative Program

New York resident Keefe Gorman is an accomplished skier and financial professional for Merrill Lynch. In addition to his work with Merrill Lynch, Keefe Gorman plays an active role in his community. He previously served on the board of directors for the Reconstruction Home, a nonprofit nursing care facility in Ithaca. The facility offers a number of enrichment opportunities for residents, such the New Beginnings restorative nursing program.

New Beginnings strives to promote the independence of residents and alter the perception that nursing homes are “the end of the line.” Designed for individuals who recently lost the ability to perform daily living tasks on their own as a result of disease or age-related conditions, the program focuses on returning individuals to a level of physical functioning and preventing the deterioration of daily living skills and activities.

Additionally, New Beginnings can benefit residents who exhibit behaviors such as crying and aimless wandering. By increasing their ability to perform basic living tasks residents previously did for themselves for years, the program allows them to regain self-esteem and dignity.

Downhill vs. Cross-Country Skiing

A wealth an investment advisor at Merrill Lynch, Keefe Gorman has been listed by Barron’s magazine as one of the country’s top brokers and investment advisors on numerous occasions. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, Keefe Gorman took part in the United States professional ski tour.

While the major difference between cross-country and downhill skiing is fairly obvious, there are a number of technical strengths and physical requirements associated with the sport’s two primary disciplines that may be overlooked by the casual skier or television viewer.

The difference begins with the skis themselves, which are attached to the boots of a cross-country athlete only at the toes; a downhill skier is fully attached to the skis by bindings. Additionally, downhill skiers require a greater amount of technical training to prepare themselves for the high speeds involved in the sport. Cross-country skiers, meanwhile, focus primarily on endurance training, since the movements involved with uphill, downhill, and level-terrain cross-country skiing are more natural to the body. Cross-country skiing is also a less expensive sport than downhill skiing, and in the United States there are far more areas available to cross-country skiers than there are alpine ski resorts.

Four Types of Tennis Players

M. Keefe Gorman presently serves as a managing director of a Division 1 wealth management team with Merrill Lynch. Outside of his work with Merrill Lynch, M. Keefe Gorman plays a number of sports, including golf and tennis.

Like golf, tennis is often referred to as a game individuals can play from childhood through old age. Over a lifetime of play, an individual will develop a unique style that generally can fall into one of four categories. The grinder, or pusher, is often referred to as a human backboard. This type of player possesses no weapons beyond elite consistency and impressive stamina. A grinder rarely misses a shot and will never beat themselves, but can be defeated by an aggressive yet measured approach to the net, which eliminates the pusher’s running game. Similar to the grinder is the counter puncher, another fast and balanced player who rarely makes errors. Unlike the grinder the counter is not afraid to attack. The counter puncher, however, still lacks a finishing shot and relies on using his or her opponent’s pace and angles against them. Attacking the net is again the winning strategy, but the counter puncher is much more capable of ripping a passing shot when compared to the grinder.

The aggressive baseliner is the natural progression from a counter puncher. This type of player is capable of hitting winning groundstrokes from anywhere on the court, and often will do just that. These players are prone to making many errors, and while they are capable of hitting a less aggressive player off of the court, a patient tactician can begin drawing these errors consistently as a match wears on. The final type of tennis player is the serve and volleyer. This player has a serve with pace and control that sets up an easy approach to net. Against a solid serve and volley player, opponents must simply focus on their own service games and wait for the occasional mishit serve that can be attacked for a passing shot.

The Basics of Alpine Skiing Competitions

Keefe Gorman, currently a Merrill Lynch managing director, has built a reputation for being an outstanding financial advisor. He has been listed as a top-50 broker by Registered Representative Magazine, and Barron’s Magazine twice named him to its list of the “Top 100 Advisors.” When he’s not focusing on assisting clients at Merrill Lynch, Keefe Gorman enjoys competitive skiing and has raced on both the U.S. Pro Mogul Tour and the U.S. Pro Ski Tour.

Currently, Gorman participates in the Song Mountain Training Center and Race Club, which offers training in alpine skiing skills. In alpine skiing, racers follow a set path marked by sets of two tall poles to keep them away from obstacles. In downhill skiing competitions, racers wind around the poles while focusing on achieving the best time, reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour or higher.

In the slalom competition, skiers focus on showcasing their turning ability by maneuvering through narrow gates at speeds averaging 25 miles per hour. Some alpine skiing competitions also include giant slalom or “Super G” events, which test both downhill speed and slalom turning skills. Finally, freestyle alpine skiing competitions allow competitors to incorporate “hot-dogging” tricks into a downhill ski run.

The Ithaca Sunrise Rotary Club, a charter of Rotary International, is committed to peace through service – the 2012-13 Rotary International theme. To this end, Ithaca Sunrise Rotary has partnered with the Ovalle, Chile Rotary club to build a facility for teaching English. Through district matching with International Rotary foundation grants, the funds to equip an English teaching lab will be raised. Keefe Gorman is currently on the Board of Directors of the Ithaca Sunrise Rotary Club and recently traveled to Chile to check up on the project.

The need for English teaching facilities in Ovalle is great because residents of this small city north of Santiago do not have access to English language classes beyond high school. English speaking and writing skills are important for Chileans wishing to do business with English speaking countries.

Rotary International’s strength lies in the ability to connect people who otherwise may not be aware of another’s need, and in the connections already in place through Rotary clubs. This partnership between Ithaca and Ovalle is an example of that strength.
